Right now the Esplanade place is an uncolorful, boring place in Biel with a very low usage. The large concrete place is hard and uncomfortable. In addition, it is also unfavorable in terms of global warming and urban heat.
The urban heat effect is a typical phenomenon of the urban climate. In cities and agglomerations, higher air temperatures can be observed near the ground compared to the rural environment.
According to swissinfo.ch, every second person in the world lives in a city. The high heat is making everyday life in a city increasingly torturous, especially for the elderly.
Planting vegetation in cities, such as green areas and trees on asphaltic soil, lowers the air temperature by up to 5° C.
A place as a meeting zone for groups of people and cultural events - a place that serve the different needs of the target groups and thus promotes the togetherness and diversity for which the city of Biel is known. Green spaces, water oases and bright floor paintings create an ecological place for the future.

Jump into the week! For skaters, there is a green mobile skatepark decorated with plants. Young or old: all skaters are welcome to show fresh tricks at the skatepark.
1, 2, 3 - Trampoline Time! There are several trampolines on the course that invite children and sports enthusiasts to have fun and move around.

Sit down, relax and let go. In the green urban gardening zone, you can unwind on the mobile benches. The green plants in the colored pallets refresh the atmosphere on the place.
The water oases are not only ecological, but also provide water fun on hot days. The colorful floor paintings stand for diversity, harmony and joy and ensure that the sun’s rays are no longer absorbed but reflected back. There are also water dispensers for all visitors.

The place is made of different floors: the relax zone is covered with gravel, the sports area and the playground zone are made of tartan floor (soft material). And the rest of the concrete floor is decorated with playful floor paintings.
All elements are movable and not permanently installed, so that street food festivals, the ice rink and other events can still take place and the new elements do not interfere.

We are Julia, Fabienne and Estella - three multimedia production students from Bern and Biel. The project «the green utopia for a colorful future» was created in the autumn semester of 2021 during our studies at the FHGR in the subject «visualization». During the two project weeks were coached by the one and only Noah Schär.
